Discover Alberta’s Southland: Wide Horizons, Ghost Towns & Hidden History

Dunmore to Milk River Circle Tour | Southern Alberta Road Trip

This Southern Alberta circle tour rolls through grasslands, ghost towns, coulees, and crossroads full of untold stories. From Dunmore to Milk River and back again, you’ll find wide skies, prairie solitude, and local stops that still feel untouched by time.

What makes this tour special? It’s the in-between places — the overlooked dots on the map where the real Alberta lives and breathes.

🌾 From Dunmore to Milk River: Where Prairie Meets Badlands
Start in Dunmore, just outside Medicine Hat, and head south through Seven Persons and Purple Springs, where the land stretches flat and wide. Pass through Taber, Alberta’s corn capital, and stop in Grassy Lake for a snack or a stroll.

From Foremost to Etzikom, discover museum stops and forgotten landmarks. The Etzikom Windmill Museum is a hidden gem worth pulling over for. Ghost town lovers will find their fix in Manyberries and Orion, where abandoned buildings whisper stories of early settlement. End this leg in Milk River, gateway to Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park.

🛣️ Return from Milk River: Small Towns, Big Sky
Loop back north through Warner and New Dayton, then hit Raymond and Coaldale — both home to rich agricultural heritage and peaceful prairie main streets.

Lethbridge brings a brief urban break before you head north again through Hays, Enchant, Turin, and Bow Island, each offering a place to refuel, grab a photo, or chat with a local who’s proud of where they’re from.

Whether you're looking for a weekend ride or a full-day drive, Maps 7 and 8 deliver laid-back roads and real Alberta stories.

What makes this tour special? It’s built for those who want to travel slower, dig deeper, and find beauty where others just pass through.

🌊 Lake Country & Easy Cruising
Starting in Wetaskiwin, head west through Winfield, Hoadley, and Bluffton, where the road bends through farmland and forest. Rimbey and Bentley bring small-town energy, with diners, antique shops, and summer markets. Ma-Me-O Beach is a peaceful lakeside stop — bring your camera or your fishing rod.

🛤️ Quiet Roads & Heritage Routes
On the return loop, explore the quieter eastern side. ☕ Hidden Gems Along the Way
Stop for pie in Bentley, check out the farm museum in Bashaw, or walk the boardwalk in Lacombe’s historic Flatiron District. These aren’t places to pass — they’re places to pause.

📸 Pro Tip:
The light over Ma-Me-O Beach at sunset, or fog drifting through Tees in the early morning, will stop you in your tracks. Bring your camera. Bring time.
